Caregiver Corner > Signs of Medicine Misuse or Overuse

Itís important to be aware of signs of medicine misuse or overuse because older adults can be more sensitive to the effects of medicine and also may have multiple medical conditions that require multiple medicines. A few examples of symptoms that can occur when medicines are not used properly or may be interfering with or harmfully interacting with other medicines include:

  • depression
  • falls
  • dizziness
  • unsteadiness
  • excessive fatigue
  • immobility
  • confusion

Unusual bruising or bleeding, difficulty breathing or swallowing, blurred vision, and difficulty waking up or staying awake are other symptoms to be concerned about.

Call the older adultís healthcare professional for help if you are concerned about symptoms or behaviors that donít seem normal to you.
